B Barber came to Total Books Accountants Ltd through our Cardiff office at a point of real pressure. He had fallen behind on his Self Assessment tax returns for several years, did not have a clear picture of what he owed, and was increasingly worried about HMRC penalties, interest, enforcement action, and what it meant for his future.

What looked like a simple tax return catch-up was actually a much bigger personal tax and HMRC compliance problem. Years of missing returns, self-employed accounts, penalty exposure and growing tax debt had built up. Like many self-employed people in this position, he felt overwhelmed and had started to fear that there was no practical route out.

    The challenge

The main issue was clear. B Barber had a seven-year backlog involving personal tax returns and self-employed accounts, with six years already late and significant HMRC pressure building.

The missing filings were only part of the problem. Once the position was reviewed properly, it became clear that the case involved several connected issues at once:

    • seven years of overdue personal tax returns
    • self-employed accounts that needed to be prepared and reconstructed
    • late filing penalties of around £6,000
    • historic tax liabilities, payments on account and interest of around £50,000
    • serious concern about affordability and whether bankruptcy might become the only option

This was not just about filing paperwork. It was about creating a manageable plan, reducing avoidable penalties, and helping the client regain control of his finances.

    What Total Books did

The first step was to bring order to the situation. We worked through the records year by year, gathered the available financial information, reconstructed income and expenses where needed, and prepared the outstanding self-employed accounts.

Once the records were in shape, we completed and submitted seven years of personal tax returns through the correct HMRC channels. Every return was reviewed carefully so the figures were accurate and the wider tax position was properly understood before anything was filed.

We then dealt with the penalty issue directly. Because the returns had been filed late, B Barber was facing around £6,000 in late filing penalties. That would have made an already difficult tax position even harder to resolve.

To challenge this, we prepared a detailed mitigating letter to HMRC explaining the background to the delays, the steps the client had taken to put matters right, and the fact that he was now actively engaging and becoming compliant. We supported the case with accurate calculations, clear records and a structured explanation of the circumstances.

That work made a real difference. HMRC accepted the appeal and removed the majority of the late filing penalties, overturning nearly £6,000 in potential charges. That immediately reduced the pressure and made the overall debt more realistic to manage.

    The repayment plan

Removing penalties was a major win, but it did not remove the underlying tax bill. The remaining balance, including historic tax, first and second payments on account, and accrued interest, was still around £50,000.

The next priority was affordability. We worked closely with B Barber to understand his income, business costs, day-to-day living commitments and cash flow. That allowed us to present HMRC with a repayment proposal that was realistic rather than wishful.

After discussions with HMRC, we secured a 16-year repayment plan at £400 per month. That gave the client a structured and sustainable way forward without destroying his ability to continue trading and meeting his normal commitments.

This was a turning point. Instead of living with uncertainty and fear, he now had a clear repayment route, a compliant tax position, and a plan he could actually manage.

    The wider outcome

The financial outcome was important, but the personal outcome mattered just as much. This case had become a major source of anxiety. At one stage, B Barber had been considering bankruptcy because he could not see another way through the debt and pressure.

By resolving the historic returns, reducing the penalties and negotiating long-term terms with HMRC, we helped remove that immediate sense of crisis. He was no longer stuck avoiding the problem. He had clarity, structure and a workable plan.

We also supported him beyond the tax issue itself. Because his affairs were now being handled properly and his income could be presented clearly, we were able to help with mortgage and property planning. We put together the necessary documentation, showed his self-employed income accurately, and helped create a more lender-friendly financial picture. As a result, he was able to secure a new mortgage and move forward with a property purchase.

    Results at a glance

This case delivered three major outcomes:

    • seven years of overdue tax returns and accounts were completed and submitted
    • nearly £6,000 in late filing penalties were successfully appealed
    • a 16-year HMRC repayment plan at £400 per month was secured

Just as importantly, the client moved from stress and uncertainty to a stable position where he could focus on his business, family and future.

Why this matters for other self-employed taxpayers

Falling behind with Self Assessment does not usually fix itself. Interest builds, penalties can stack up, and the longer the issue is left, the more difficult it can feel to face.

The right support changes that. A strong accountant can help you rebuild records, file historic returns, speak to HMRC properly, reduce penalties where there are grounds to do so, and negotiate a repayment plan that reflects real affordability. In many cases, the goal is not just technical compliance. It is helping someone move from panic to a practical solution.
