Customers' Feedback
Our expert accountancy team is happy to help, whatever the issue, as we personalise our assistance to meet the individual needs of each of our clients. We’ve received feedback from some of the people we’ve helped so far – here’s what they’ve said:
Helped a Cardiff Self-Employed Client Resolve Historic HMRC Issues
A self-employed client came to Total Books Accountants Ltd through our Cardiff office after falling behind on his Self Assessment tax returns for several years. By the time he reached out, the situation had become overwhelming. He was worried about HMRC penalties, growing interest, enforcement action, and the possibility that the debt had become too large to manage.
We began by reviewing the full position and breaking the problem into clear, practical steps. That involved gathering records, reconstructing income and expenses, preparing self-employed accounts, and completing seven years of outstanding personal tax returns. Once the returns were ready, we submitted everything through the correct HMRC channels and built a clear picture of the total liability.
The client was facing around £6,000 in late filing penalties on top of a much larger historic tax bill. We prepared a detailed appeal to HMRC, setting out the background, the reasons for the delays, and the steps being taken to bring his affairs fully up to date. As a result, HMRC accepted the appeal and removed the majority of those penalties.
The remaining balance, including historic tax, payments on account and interest, was still around £50,000. We worked closely with the client to assess affordability and negotiated a 16-year repayment plan with HMRC at £400 per month. That gave him a realistic way forward and helped remove the fear of immediate financial collapse.
With his tax affairs back under control, we also supported him with mortgage and property planning, helping him present his income properly and move forward with a new property purchase. For the client, the result was not just compliance, but real peace of mind.

Self Assessment for Cardiff taxpayers: the code, the dates and what goes wrong
Living in Cardiff makes you a Welsh taxpayer, and HMRC marks that with a C at the front of your tax code. For 2026 to 2027 the Welsh rates are the same as England and Northern Ireland, so the C does not raise your bill. It raises the chance of a mismatch, because the flag lives on HMRC's record rather than on your return, and it only updates when HMRC knows you moved.
That matters more here than almost anywhere else in the UK. Cardiff sits half an hour from the English border. People work in Bristol and live in Pontcanna, keep a flat in Newport and a family home in Penarth, or move across the Severn in the middle of a tax year. HMRC decides Welsh taxpayer status on where your main home was for most of the tax year, 6 April to 5 April, not on where you were on 5 April and not on where the work is.
One date, three charges. 11:59pm on 31 January 2027 carries the online return for 2025 to 2026, the balancing payment, and the first payment on account for 2026 to 2027. Filing late costs £100 immediately even with no tax to pay, then £10 a day from three months, capped at £900. Paying late costs 5 per cent at 30 days, again at six months and again at twelve, with interest at 7.75 per cent as at 9 October 2026.
What we check before we file a Cardiff return
- The residence flag and the tax code prefix on HMRC's record, against where you actually lived across the year.
- Whether payments on account are due, and whether reducing them is worth the interest risk if income has not actually fallen.
- Rental profit computed year by year, with the finance cost restriction applied as it stood in each year.
- Anything HMRC already holds that your figures need to agree with, before the return goes anywhere.

Self Assessment accountants in CardiffCommon questions
Am I a Welsh taxpayer if I live in Cardiff but work in Bristol?
Yes. Welsh taxpayer status follows where your main home was across the tax year, not where you earn. HMRC puts a C at the front of your code and applies the Welsh rates to your employment income, self employment profit and rental profit. Where your employer sits makes no difference.
Do Cardiff taxpayers pay more Income Tax than people in England?
Not for 2026 to 2027. The Welsh bands are the same: nothing to £12,570, 20 per cent to £50,270, 40 per cent to £125,140, 45 per cent above. Dividends and savings interest are taxed at the UK rates wherever you live. The Welsh element changes the code, not the amount.
I have never filed a return and I started trading last year. How bad is it?
Manageable if you move now. Register straight away, and because the 5 October 2026 deadline has passed HMRC will set your filing date three months from the letter rather than 31 January. The exposure is a failure to notify penalty, and coming forward before HMRC contacts you is what keeps it at the bottom of the range.
How quickly can you take over from my current accountant?
Usually within a week. We ask them for the handover, register as your agent with HMRC, and check the residence flag and the coding before anything is filed. You do not need to have a difficult conversation with them first.
Fifteen minutes on the phone will tell you whether your return is routine or whether the coding needs fixing before January.
